Overview

A gastroscopy looks at the lining of the gullet (oesophagus), stomach and the first part of the small bowel using a thin flexible camera passed through the mouth. It can take biopsies and treat some problems.

Why it's done

What happens

A quick test, usually 10–15 minutes. You can choose throat-numbing spray or sedation. Biopsies can be taken painlessly during the test.
