Gastroscopy: cost, NHS wait & what to expect
Typical self-pay price
£900–£2,000
Typical NHS wait
Around 4–12 weeks
Overview
A gastroscopy looks at the lining of the gullet (oesophagus), stomach and the first part of the small bowel using a thin flexible camera passed through the mouth. It can take biopsies and treat some problems.
Why it's done
- Persistent indigestion, reflux or difficulty swallowing
- Unexplained upper-tummy pain or anaemia
- To check for ulcers, inflammation or coeliac disease
What happens
A quick test, usually 10–15 minutes. You can choose throat-numbing spray or sedation. Biopsies can be taken painlessly during the test.
Recovery
- Eat and drink again once any throat numbing wears off
- Do not drive for the day if you have sedation
- Biopsy results take a week or two
Risks & things to consider
- A sore throat for a day
- Small risk of bleeding after biopsies
- Very small risk of a tear (perforation)
- Sedation risks
Alternatives
- A trial of acid-reducing medication first in some cases
- Barium swallow X-ray in specific situations
- Non-invasive tests for H. pylori infection
Questions to ask your provider
- Should I choose throat spray or sedation?
- Does the price include biopsies?
- When will I get my results?
- Do I need to stop any medicines beforehand?
