Gastroscopy (endoscopy): cost, NHS wait & what to expect
Typical self-pay price
£900–£2,200
Typical NHS wait
Around 6–13 weeks for routine referrals
Overview
A gastroscopy uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to look at the lining of your oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine, to investigate symptoms such as indigestion, reflux or swallowing problems.
Why it's done
- Persistent indigestion or reflux
- Difficulty swallowing
- Investigating anaemia or stomach pain
What happens
Usually takes 10–15 minutes, with throat-numbing spray and/or sedation. Most people go home the same day.
Recovery
- A sore throat for a day is common
- If sedated, you'll need someone to take you home and shouldn't drive for 24 hours
Risks & things to consider
- Sore throat
- Small risk of bleeding or, rarely, a tear
- Reaction to sedation
Alternatives
- Medication trial for reflux
- Other tests depending on symptoms
- NHS endoscopy where indicated
Questions to ask your provider
- Is sedation included?
- Are biopsies included in the price?
- When will I get results?
